If you are not a heavy data user you cant switch over to the EDGE network and not worry nearly as much about calls being dropped. While the core system services may be the same, the front-end is often modified by various carriers. From a developer standpoint, this can create issues in that there is no uniformity between the multiple manufactuers. A program could run differently on a HTC handset vs a Motorola one.
